How to download and use Overdrive Media Console on your iDevice

This is a repost from a few months ago. The links are updated and the pdf of the booklet instructions should now open and the other link will direct you to our new downloadable materials page that includes lots of tutorials for other ereading devices.

This method works for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Click here for a .pdf version of this tutorial. Other ereader tutorials can be found on the library’s device help page.

  1. Search the App Store for “Overdrive Media Console”
    Install App – This app is free and works with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.Step 1
  2. The app is loading. When it is complete, open it.Step 2
  3. Sign in with your Adobe ID. Adobe IDs are free and easy to get. If you do not have one just follow the instructions you will find by touching  “Register at Adobe.com”Step 003
  4. Once you are signed in with your Adobe ID, it’s time to authorize your device. Touch the “Settings button at the bottom of the screen.Step 4
  5. Touch the “Authorize” button.
    Once your device is authorized, you never have to do this step again unless you uninstall the Overdrive Media Console App. and reinstall it.Step 005
  6. Enter in your Adobe ID and password.
    Touch the Authorize button.
    You should see the spinning gear while it is working.Step 6
  7. This screen confirms that your device is authorized with your Adobe ID.
    Touch the “Get Books” button at the bottom of the screen.Step 7
  8. Now we are going to link to Rochester Public Library’s digital catalog.
    Touch “Add a Library” button.
  9. Step 8Type “Rochester Public Library” into the box and touch the orange “Search” button.Step 9
  10. Select the “Rochester Public Library” that is in Minnesota.Step 10
  11. You are now connected with the Rochester Public Library’s digital collection.
    Touch the “Rochester Public Library (MN)” line. You will always be connected to this library until you uninstall the app.Step 11
  12. You are now looking at the Rochester Public Library digital collection.
    Touch the “Login” button at the top right.Step 12
  13. Log in with your valid library card and PIN.
    The PIN is usually the last four digits of your phone number.Step 13
  14. If you already have an ebook checked out, touch the “My eAccount” then the “My eShelf” button and skip to step 20.
    If you do not have an ebook checked out yet, touch the “Browse” button in the menu bar.Step 14
  15. All EPUB and PDF ebook formats are compatible with your iDevice.
    You may browse per type, genre, or if you know what you are looking for you may search by title or author by touching the “Search” button.Step 15
  16. This is what you will see when you touch the “Browse all Adobe EPUB” titles button.
    Check the little box below the search box to limit your view to available items only.Step 16
  17. Now all you see are titles that are available at the moment.
    Once you find a title you want to check out, touch the “Add to eCart” button.Step 17
  18. At this time, you may continue browsing for more ebooks or you may touch the “Proceed to Checkout” button.
    Note: If not checked out within 30 minutes, eBooks are returned back to the collection.Step 18
  19. You may change the loan period to 7, 14, or 21 days.
    Touch the “Confirm check out” button to continue.Step 19
  20. After confirming your check out you are automatically brought to your eShelf.
    Touch the “Download” button.Step 20
  21. Your title is being downloaded to the Overdrive Media Console.Step 21
  22. This screen shows the downloading process. It also shows how many days you have on your loan period.Step 22
  23. The ebook is finished downloading and ready to read.
    Touch the title to being reading.Step 23
  24. Overdrive will open the book. From the settings screen, you may change the font size, screen brightness, and find your bookmarks from this view.
    Touch the middle of the screen to switch to full screen view.Step 24
  25. This is the full-screen view. From here you may place bookmarks (upper right corner) and see how many pages the book has (lower right corner).
    Touch the right side of the screen to turn the page forward, touch the left side of screen to page backward, touch middle of screen to toggle back to the setting screen.Step 25

    I would like to steal this excellent presentation for my own library. Sadly, the pdf version won’t open for me.
