Friends of the Library and Summer Reading Programs

A cart full of children's books

The Minnesota Association of Library Friends recently had an article on their webpage about how Friends groups all over the place are supporting summer reading programs in their local libraries. If you read through the list of  things that the Friends are doing, you’ll find that there is a remarkable amount of support from these Friends groups.

Bravo Friends, Bravo!

Near the bottom of the page you’ll find the write-up about the Friends of the Rochester Public Library… did you find it?

It’s one short sentence. “The Friends of the Rochester Public Library fund incentives for the SRP.”

Here is what that one short sentence really means:

The Friends of the Rochester Public Library funded all the prizes and reading rewards for our Young Adult and Children’s Summer Reading Programs.

This year the Young Adult theme is “Own the Night” and the teens who keep track of the time they read this summer will receive prizes. Teens who read for 10 hours get a glow in the dark flying disc, those who read for 30 hours get the disc plus a drawstring backpack with an earbud port. For reading 50 hours they receive the disc, the backpack, AND a mini LED flashlight, and for reading 100 hours they get the disc, the backpack, the flashlight AND an awesome “Own the Night” t-shirt. The 20 teens who log in the most hours reading will also get a $30.00 gift card to one of our local bookstores, restaurants, or retail stores. Not too shabby!

The Children’s Reading Program theme this year is Dream Big, Read!
It encourages children to not only read but to participate in library programs, play flashlight tag at night, scribble with markers and all sorts of other fun activities. For each activity completed, children color in a star on the reading log and after they have filled-in 50 stars they can bring it in for their rewards. This year the reward is a book of their choice and there are 2,500 to choose from. There are board books, beginning readers, picture books, chapter books, non-fiction books and even books in Spanish!

None of this would be possible without the support of the Friends of the Rochester Public Library!
